VIOXX an arthritis drug has been recalled If you or a loved one have taken Vioxx and experienced any life threatening side effects, injuries or disabilities as a result, you may be entitled to compensation from the drug companies responsible for your injury. It is important that you obtain expert legal advice from a vioxx lawyer if you believe that you may have a claim. VIOXX (a COX-2 inhibitor) selectively blocks the COX-2 enzyme - which is responsible for triggering pain and inflammation. The major selling point of Vioxx was that it was supposed to have fewer side effects – especially gastrointestinal side effects like gastric bleeding and ulcers - than older types of anti-arthritis drugs on the market. The prescription pain-killer Vioxx was approved in Australia in 1999. It was used by up to 300,000 Australians, mostly for rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis pain. In Australia in 2003, the Therapeutic Goods Administration warned doctors there was an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. But instead of responding by setting up a study to test the long-term safety of Vioxx, Merck chose to mount an aggressive campaign at doctors and patients to convince them the drug is safe and free of heart side effects. What they did do was a three-year trial to see whether the drug would help people who had benign tumours of the bowel. It turned out not to be any help – instead it showed the drug doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke in participants who were taking it. Merck & Co. voluntarily withdrew Vioxx (rofecoxib) from worldwide markets due to its own studies which showed that the drug increased the patient's risk of heart attack and stroke. NEWS FLASH: A jury in Texas has awarded $US253 million ($337 million) to the widow of a man who died of a heart attack after taking the drug, in the first of more than 4000 cases pending in the US. Manufacturer Merck is now bracing for hundreds of similar lawsuits from around the world, including in Australia. A number of vioxx lawyers in Australia are preparing class actions on behalf of hundreds of people who took Vioxx and had heart attacks. We can provide you with free legal advice as to whether you should pursue a compensation claim. Our Australian vioxx lawyers are aligned with well-known and leading U.K and American vioxx lawyers who are acting for litigants who have suffered significant injuries and disabilities as a result of taking Vioxx.
