VIOXX

Vioxx is an arthritis drug, commonly referred to as non steroidal and anti-inflammatory drug. Vioxx - a "COX 2" inhibitor - was approved for sale in 1999.

Vioxx was recalled by its manufacturer, Merck USA at the end of September, 2004 due to evidence that it causes heart attack, stroke, sudden and unexplained death as well as significant increases in the risk of serious thrombotic cardiovascular adverse events.

The company's own study found that people who had taken a dosage of 25 milligrams for 18 months or more faced a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes. In fact, it was revealed a 5 times increased risk of heart attacks and strokes for Vioxx users compared with users of naproxen (Naprosyn).

Merck failed to warn treating doctors or patients following the results of their study. No information, let alone warnings, about the risks were given, until some two years later.

It is estimated in Australia that over 300,000 people have taken the drug.

Under the Trade Practices Act 1974, people injured by a defective product have a right to compensation in Australia.
