If you have been injured as a result of taking vioxx, you may be able to make a claim for thousands of dollars in compensation. What is Vioxx? VIOXX, produced by Merck & Co. is one of a new class of drugs released in 1999 called COX-2 inhibitors. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) often prescribed to relieve acute pain in adults, dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cycles), osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The drug maker Merck estimates that 13 and 24 million patients have been prescribed the drug in the U.S. and worldwide, respectively. History of Vioxx- its approval and recall The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved VIOXX in May 1999. However, a later study, VIGOR (VIOXX GI Outcomes Research) revealed that although VIOXX reduced the chances of ulcers and gastrointestinal problems, it also increased the chances of heart attacks by its users. This new side effect was included in the drug's labeling as of April 2002. On September 30, 2004 Merck & Co. announced its voluntary withdrawal of VIOXX from all markets worldwide. The decision to withdraw VIOXX was based on data from a recent study, Adenomatous Polyp Prevention on VIOXX (APPROVe). The aim of this medical trial was to see if 25 mg of VIOXX was effective in preventing the reappearance of colon polyps in patients. However, the trial had to be stopped early because the data showed a 4 times increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in the VIOXX users. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Association issued recall notices on 1st October 2004.Thousands of Australians are now seeking legal advice regarding their right to bring a vioxx claim against the manufacturer of vioxx. It is alleged that Merck was aware of the potential risks associated with their high-selling pain prescription medication Vioxx (also known as rofecoxib) for a couple of years before they took action to protect patients from the serious side effects associated with their product. Side-effects associated with Vioxx include:
People who have been injured because of Vioxx use can commence legal action by filing a Vioxx claim to recover compensation associated with their injuries and disabilities. A Vioxx claim can help a victim receive compensation for all related medical expenses, pain and suffering, past and future loss of income.
