FEDERAL: Should Hospitals be rated and compared?

31.01.08: Federal Health Ministers met today to discuss funding issues. While it might all be Labor governments around the table, divisions are already emerging with New South Wales resisting a call from the Federal Government for all public hospitals to be subject to performance scorecards.

Measuring hospital performance is all about ensuring our health system is delivering for the public. NSW opposition health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner said: "The Iemma government hates this proposal because it would expose their mismanagement."

Ms Roxon said states and territories already had their own accountability and reporting measures, but a national database was required.

NSW: Royal North Shore Hospital Parliamentary Inquiry Report

The parliamentary inquiry into Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital has handed down 45 recommendations, after it was sparked by the miscarriage in September. Opposition's health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner says the recommendations made by the committee are "wishy washy" and will not lead to real solutions. State Health Minister Reba Meagher has dismissed the concerns.

NSW: Royal North Shore Hospital problems- cockroaches in operating theatres

A FORMER senior doctor at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) says complaints that he had to kill cockroaches on operating theatre tables during surgery were ignored by management.

It has also been confirmed that an anaesthetist at the hospital was forced to catch an unconscious patient after an operating table broke in half.

Libs, Labor won't commit to beds plan

NEITHER the Government nor Opposition is prepared to commit to a doctors' plan to fund more hospital beds throughout Australia but both agree more money is needed.

The Australian Medical Association has said an investment of $1.2 billion would allow hospitals to open 3750 beds and reduce waiting lists.

Doctors slam federal hospital funding

THE federal Government must match the states' funding of hospitals and take more responsibility for their woes, doctors say.

QUEENSLAND is under federal pressure to open what is potentially a can of worms in its public hospital system before the September 9 election.

Yesterday the Health Minister, Tony Abbott, wrote to his Queensland counterpart, Stephen Robertson, demanding "a full, open and independent" inquiry into allegations that an underqualified, Egyptian-born doctor performed unsupervised and flawed surgery at Mackay Base Hospital.
