ORAL AND MAXILLO FACIAL SURGERY

The Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon deals with dental surgery and surgery on the jaw and nearby structures such as the salivary and parotid glands. Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are usually qualified Dentists as well as qualified Doctors specialising in Surgery.

They may also deal with dental implants, temporo-mandibular joint problems, facial injuries and cancers of the head and neck.

Most common clinical areas where there has been claims of negligence:
• dental implants and dental extractions/operations, nerve damage
• delay in diagnosis of cancer of the salivary glands
• mismanagement of cancers of the face or neck

It is important to remember that not every adverse medical outcome that occurs with surgery is the result of medical negligence. Just because something goes wrong, does necessarily mean that negligence has occurred.

If you are concerned that your treatment has been substandard and that you have suffered damage or loss as a result, you should consider making a formal complaint and/or seeking the advice of a lawyer who will investigate the possibility of a compensation claim.

In assessing your case, a solicitor will look at documentation such as your Dental and Hospital Records; Dentists’ Records, Operation Records, Nursing Records, Out-Patient Clinic Records and Correspondence; X-rays and/or CT or MRI scans.
