Revamp of doctor watchdog urged

A FORMER top Medicare bureaucrat has denounced the effectiveness of the federal agency that investigates doctors suspected of overcharging, saying it barely scratches the surface of the problem and is too controlled by medical groups.

GPs named and shamed for rorts against Medicare DOCTORS found guilty of misusing Medicare have been named for the first time - a move regulators hope will deter other GPs from abusing the system.

A report sent to more than 45,000 GPs and specialists names 26 doctors who were disqualified, reprimanded or, in some instances, forced to repay up to $270,000 to Medicare Australia.
