Disease and Illness from Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos conditions include mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural disease, pleural thickening and pleural plaques. These conditions usually have a long latency period between the date the worker was exposed, and the date the condition develops. For example, the average latency period for mesothelioma is approximately 35 years.

In general, exposure may occur only when the asbestos-containing material is disturbed in some way to release particles and fibres into the air. The fibres may be easily inhaled or swallowed and can cause serious health problems.

Inhaling asbestos fibres can have a toxic and permanent damaging effect on lung tissue. Asbestos fibres irritate and inflame lung tissues. The result is scarring to the lung tissues- asbestosis. The scarring makes it hard to breathe and difficult for oxygen and carbon dioxide pass through the lungs.  Exposure to asbestos may increase the risk of several serious diseases: asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and other cancers.

Asbestosis symptoms may not manifest until 10-20 years after the initial exposure. The more frequent and the longer the duration of exposure to asbestos, and the greater the concentration of asbestos fibres that are inhaled, the greater the risk of developing asbestosis.
